About
Hi, I am Tanel Pärnamaa. You can contact me at tanel.parnamaa [at] gmail.com.
I focus on making ML work in the real world. Thus, for the past 10 years, I’ve occasionally developed custom algorithms but mostly been crafting, curating, and playing with data sets. Some of my plays:
Images
- Protein subcellular localization from high throughput microscopy images.
- Bounding box detection, semantic segmentation, and motion prediction for autonomous robots.
- Virtual fitting room - generative modeling of images for fit recommendation.
- Fine-grained attribute prediction for garments.
Text
- I like to reproduce NLP papers on the Estonian language. For example, I’ve wrangled the Common Crawl corpus and trained the GPT-2 model to generate text in Estonian.
- Machine translation from English to Estonian.
- Learning word embeddings for Estonian, comparing word pair relationships, and translating word vectors between languages.
- Question answering system for standardized 8th grade science exams.
- Retrieval of medical records related to heart attack, and classifying between heart attack type (STEMI and NSTEMI) based on free-form text fields.
Audio
- Noise suppression and echo cancellation for real-time media stack.
Tabular
- Now-casting Euro Area GDP.
- Detection of fake Twitter followers.
Spatial
- National segregation in Estonia.
